Did you know that in 2017 the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning in the Western Cape took the decision to encourage the diversion of organic waste from landfills over a l 0-year period?
According to a report done by the department, at least 37% of the waste generated in the Western Cape is organic waste. That is literally so much goodness that could go into making better quality soil (food ain’t waste people) through composting. But instead is being literally wasted in landfill AND releasing methane into the environment as it decomposes – contributing to global heating and the climate crisis.
It’s clearly time for change and the Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning thankfully agrees.
As such, the Department decided to put a staggered ban in place to prevent organic waste from reaching landfill. By 2022 the Department will enforce that 50% of organic waste needs to be diverted from landfill and by 2027 a total ban on organic waste will come in to play.
2022 is not far away and the ban is likely to extend to the rest of South Africa, so if you are a generator of organic waste and you don’t have systems in place to divert this waste from landfill, the time to start is NOW! And we can help…
